Still-in-Motion

Although a photograph is a still image, I like its ability to show motion through composition or exposure. This gallery has a collection of photographs that show movement during the time the shutter was open, from before capturing the photograph, or perhaps motion that is "still taking place." Surfers-in-Motion
With a slower shutter speed, the surrounding scene is blurred relative to the tracked, standing surfer. The surfer sitting on a surfboard, moving in an opposite direction, has a "ghostly" appearance as the wave moves forward.

Overtaking
The exposure in this photograph is set for the motionless car 29 whilst the other two cars appear to "overtake" in a blur.

Elephant Seal Tracks
The tracks show this Northern Elephant Seal (Mirounga angustirostris) was moving before capturing the photograph but is now leaving the beach...to continue in motion and swim out at sea.

Walking Marbled Godwit
With the raised foot of a Marbled Godwit (Limosa fedoa), this image captures the bird mid-stride as it forages along the beach for aquatic insects.
At Speed
Panning blurs the surrounding field of view but maintains a relatively sharp image of Jenson Button in his BAR-Honda Formula 1 racing car.

Bouncing Girl
Caught suspended in mid-air, this photograph captures a sense that Newton will extract his revenge and the girl will come back down.

Racing into the Night
This is a classic, long-exposure image captured at dusk...streaks of light are from the headlights and exhaust-flame of cars racing around the road coarse at Laguna Seca.
